Experts say about ICT panorama in 2012 31/01/2012, 09:50:41 AM (GMT+7)

(VietNamNet Bridge)-In 2012, telecom and Internet service providers would focus on developing content services and target the sustainable development instead of striving to develop in quantity.

Jan Wassenius, CEO of Ericsson Vietnam: smart phones and tablets would push up 3G development

I believe that Vietnam’s telecom in 2012 would continue witness the strong growth. 3G services in Vietnam are still in the infant stage of development, but it would develop rapidly thanks to the development of smart phones and tablets which are becoming more affordable to people. The large coverage and high quality of networks would also help push up the development of the broad band in Vietnam and the popularity of the mobile broadband based apps.

In the near future, there would be more and more initiatives and forums on the information and technology applications in the major fields such as education, banking, transport and public security. Once the service packages are designed more flexibly which target different market segments, this would help encourage consumers use more app services.

In a long term vision, there are three tendencies which would control the development of the information and communication: mobile, broadband and cloud computing.

Nguyen Long, Secretary General of the Vietnam Informatics Association: Vietnam’s ICT is striving to sustainable development.

The year 2011 was expected to see the prosperity of the Vietnam’s information and technology, because it kicked off the project on turning Vietnam into an ICT power. However, the expectation did not come true, partially because of the Resolution No 11 which tightened spending on ICT and a lot of ICT projects were cut, the investment on the hardware development and IT solutions by businesses and state agencies decreased sharply.

The economic downturn and the low market demand both have been putting big difficulties for ICT businesses. Only a few businesses have pioneered in seeking international markets, namely Viettel (telecom), FPT (services and training) and VTC (digital content).

The economic difficulties are still existing, while the government would still have to cut public spending to help curb inflation. As such, ICT would still develop, but it would target the sustainable development which focuses on the high quality instead of the quantity. It is likely that Vietnam’s ICT would prosper in late 2012.

Vu Hoang Lien, Chair of the Vietnam Internet Association

Internet services would still witness a strong development in 2012, especially when FTTH services become more popular, while wireless Internet services such as 3G, 2G or 4G in the future are getting more developed and diversified.

I believe that the year 2012 would see the stronger development of e-commerce, especially online payment services in Vietnam.

Le Hoang Hai, Deputy General Director of FPT Technological Development Company: smart phones would see sharp price decreases

Vietnamese consumers have shifted from popular mobile phones to smart phones, since smart phones have many preeminent features, while mobile network operators have slashed 3G data charges, while the phone prices have also decreased considerably.

In the past, a smart phone was priced 5-6 million dong, while simple products now can be bought at 2-3 million dong. I think that the smart phone market in 2012 would grow by 30-50 percent over 2011.

Le Ngoc Minh, Chair of MobiFone: 2012 would be the year of data and value added services

2012 would be the time for mobile telecom firms to restructure, while the restructuring process would go in parallel with the common tendency in the national economy.

The mobile telecom market has not saturated yet, but in 2012, the increase of the number of mobile subscribers would not be too important for mobile firms any more, because the market would not boom as it did in the previous years. Meanwhile, service providers would have to think of upgrading the quality and increasing the average income per subscriber.
